TOTAN Backplastic Mod

Gaming Play Score: 9.4

"Tales of the Arabian Nights" counts as one of the most beautiful pinballs ever made by Williams and in fact, my pinball career started exactly with that pin before 8 years :-). In that time, we created lots of mods like the camel-, treasure-, and the skeleton mod. Since also other users had similar ideas and we didn´t know, if we were the first ones, we never published these mods on our web page.

After tons of hours of playing this great machine, we realized that the backwood area is too dark, meaning that the nice drawing is hard to see. As an example, please have a look at this video and pay attention to the backwood area:

So our mission was clear: Lighten the backwood area to better see the great image and hence improving the overall atmosphere of the pinball. We started by replacing the backwood with a backplastic which was perfect to lighten it from behind. Complicated was to saw the 2 wholes for both flashers, which was a small masterpiece of Dominik. Next step was the drawing, so we bough a NOS (New old Stock) drawing sticker from the states. Due to its old age and the paper print, we were not able to simply stick that drawing onto the backplastic, so we first had to scan the image. Unfortunately, this image was not perfect and did not satisfy our high-quality standards. By the way, after examining the picture in detail, we also saw some errors in the drawing... :-)

From my Atari Lync programming time, I still have a good relationship to the guys from Duranik, who did a perfect job with their Dreamcast game Sturmwind, which is just a blast ! So after some email traffic with the graphic designer Johannes Graf, informing him about our idea, he was so kind and took the time to improve the image to perfectness ! Thanks again for that awesome work ! :-)

Next step was to lighten the backplastic from behind, so we installed an LED stripe behind the plastic which now illuminates perfectly the image. This LED stripe is directly connected to the PDB board for constant power and constant illumination. Last step was to replace the original flasher with 2 cube LED flashers. Now the pinball makes even more fun and the gaming atmosphere is much more intense.
